What is
Recovery Magic? What does Recovery Magic do? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Recovery Magic is an automated complete system data
recovery software, which helps in
reverting problematic PC's back to working condition within 3 seconds.
Recovery Magic helps to
restore PC'S to a known system and disk
data status, either by
manually restoring with just a few clicks or automatically when rebooting
using the auto-restore option. |

How much time does it take to action
a fresh 'saved state' record used for
recovery? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Very little time. Recovery
Magic checks the health of the disk prior to saving a fresh
'saved state', and this can take a few minutes. Saving the 'saved state'
details takes only a few seconds. Recovery Magic is designed for the user
to save a fresh 'saved state' manually. The user can do this at their
convenience, whenever this is needed. |

 |
What happens when Recovery Magic
actions the recover function? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Recovering is "undoing or
returning" all activities, changes, and modifications (including new data files, programs,
configuration changes, as well as any system corruption) back to the
condition they were at the date and time when the last 'saved state' was
actioned. The recovery process is very powerful and is the key function of
Recovery Magic. It is important to understand the recovery process not
only returns the disk data back to the 'saved state' condition, but also
removes completely from the disk and system all
data and
system changes that
have taken place since the last 'saved state' details were saved. |

 |
How long will it take to recover my
system, files and data? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Typically the recovery process
is very fast, taking only about three to five seconds, additional to the
time it takes to process a normal boot and operating system load. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
 |
How does Recovery Magic ensure that
unauthorised users do not use the
functions? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
All functions of the software are
protected by a password that is setup during the installation process. The
password can be changed if needed by the authorised user.
Password change can be actioned from
Windows, using the configuration option.
Password can also be changed if the boot mode option is actioned by pressing the <HOME> key when the "Protected by Recovery Magic" message display during the boot of the PC. |

Can Recovery Magic restore data
after my hard disk is physically damaged? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
No. If the disk has been
physically damaged, all data is usually unreadable. Recovery Magic cannot
recover a disk that has been physically damaged. |

What is the difference between
Recovery Magic, and other software disk data recovery
products? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
A detailed comparison of functions and features between
Recovery Magic and other software data recovery products is available.
In summary:
Recovery Magic uses a very small sized 'saved state'
backup record.
Recovery Magic is very, very fast, considerably faster
than other software.
Recovery Magic is very easy and simple to use.
Recovery Magic locates the 'saved state' details in the boot sector of
the hard disk, whereas the others use the main memory sector of the hard
disk or a separate service CD/DVD.
Recovery
Magic does not need a booting diskette. |

How can Recovery
Magic help me protect my PC from Viruses? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The concept of using Recovery
Magic to protect a PC from a Virus, and how it can restore Virus corrupted
disk data, and how it can remove a Virus from your system is explained in
detail at the end of this manual. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
 |
Does Recovery Magic detect
Viruses? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
No, Recovery Magic does not
detect Virus activity. Recovery Magic is however a very powerful and
effective Virus recovery tool. If you encounter a Virus, then Recovery
Magic provides a very quick and very effective way of recovering your hard
disk details and system, back to the 'pre-Virus attack' provided that you saved
the last 'saved state' details prior to the Virus being encountered. One
type of Virus that can not be recovered from is the 'dormant' variety,
that waits undetected and inactive on your system until a 'trigger date'
is reached. Unfortunately if this type of Virus has been saved in your
last 'saved state', then Recovery Magic in this specific situation is unable to recover your
disk back to the 'pre dormant-Virus' state, as only one latest 'saved
state' copy is saved. |

Should I continue to use my Virus
utility with Recovery Magic? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Yes. You must continue to use
a Virus protection utility. Anti-Virus utilities are very inexpensive,
especially when compared to the value of your data and the effort required
to rebuild your computer's application and system files. |

|
 |
If a Virus attacks my computer, and
I have recovered my files and data, do I still have the virus on my hard
disk? How do I deal with the Virus? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
No, It is not necessary to deal with the
Virus. If your computer was free of Virus infection when the last Recovery
Magic 'save state' details were saved, then on completion of the recovery
process any Virus that you had will completely disappear. No other Virus
recovery action is needed. |

I would like to understand the
concept of protection and recovery, and how this can be used to recover
from disk data corruption caused by a Virus? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
It is helpful to understand the concept of protection and
recovery and how Recovery Magic operates if you think of your hard disk as
having a separate 'security vault' in addition to the normal disk area.
This is explained in detail as follows:
Recovery Magic saves a copy of the hard
disk information in the 'security vault' area. Physically this is located
in the Master Boot Area of the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) where it can not be
accessed except by Recovery Magic (the 'security vault' details are a very
compressed copy of the HDD registry details)
Imagine if the 'security vault' has everything you need,
including your operating system, baseline software and data. For peace of
mind you keep the latest copy of all your disk details in the 'security
vault'.
Under normal operating situations, when you know your
computer is Virus and error free, you can at any time unlock the 'security
vault' and transfer all the programs and data stored in the normal disk
area to the 'security vault' for Recovery Magic protection. This is easy
to do, just click on the Recovery Magic icon on the taskbar and select the
save option. A new 'security vault' record is immediately saved. When this
save is completed the 'security vault' will be locked again, has been
updated with your latest Virus free system and data
details. The contents of the 'security vault' now are safe and secured
even from Virus infection.
Think of the normal disk area
as a temporary holding or data staging area. You can use your PC with
assurance that your data is protected and secure. |

What are the system requirements for Recovery Magic? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Operating System: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows ME, and Windows XP
Hardware types: IDE and EIDE File
Systems supported: FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS
Minimum system requirements: IBM compatible 32-bit computer with 64MB RAM |
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
 |
How much disk space does Recovery
Magic need? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Very little. Typically about
0.05% or less than 1% of the hard disk partition size space. This is very
much smaller than the space requirements for other software recovery
products. |

Can Recovery Magic recover the disk
data without the user having to first reinstall Windows operating
system? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
It is not necessary to first
reinstall the operating system, then recover the disk data. The operating
system is recovered by Recovery Magic as part of the recovered data if it
has been corrupted subsequent to the last 'saved state' copy of the disk
being saved. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
 |
In view of the fact that Recovery
Magic is a security system and data recovery program, is there a
possibility of Recovery Magic writing my data to bad sectors on my hard
disk? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
No. Recovery Magic protects
data written to your local hard disk. Your operating system actually
writes the data, not Recovery Magic. |

About ScanDisk and Defrag and
Recovery Magic: |
|
| |
|
|
| |
As mentioned in the Recovery Magic Installation Guide you
should run ScanDisk and Defrag prior to installing Recovery Magic to
ensure that you have a 'clean system'. Refer to the warnings in section 6
about using these disk utilities after Recovery Magic has been installed.
A more detailed explanation of this is, quoting
Microsoft: "When ScanDisk encounters a bad sector it attempts to patch the
sector. This is known as hot fixing or hot patching. NOTE: If you are
running in check mode (/CHECKONLY), ScanDisk does not attempt to hot fix
the bad sectors. Hot patching is the process of taking a file that
contains one or more unreadable (bad) sectors and recovering all the data
that is still readable. Any data that lies in a bad sector is replaced by
zeros." |

Does Recovery Magic work in a
similar manner to Windows XP Restore
command? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
No. They are very different in both concept and function.
Recovery Magic should not be confused with Windows XP's Restore command.
Windows Restore command is a repair tool for corrupt and missing files. It
can (but not always) restore corrupt system configuration settings by
identifying and reconstructing the defective files. However, if a Virus
attacks your PC and corrupts or destroys files and configurations, the
Windows XP Restore command is completely incapable and helpless in
restoring your system's environment; the cause of the corruption, the
Virus, remains on the hard disk drive.
In the event of a Virus
attack, Recovery Magic returns your files and system configurations
exactly back to your 'saved state' state every time- without any traces
of Viruses or corruption. |

Should disk analysis programs like
ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter be used from within Windows while Recovery
Magic is installed? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
No. You should not use a disk analysis program any more
from within Windows while Recovery Magic is installed. Recovery Magic
automatically prohibits running ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter. Recovery
Magic saves the recovery backup files in the Master Boot.
Record - MBR. If you execute any similar disk management
programs and the MBR is damaged then the recovery may not be able to be
done successfully. If you need to run these programs, refer to the last
question in this section.
Note however, that the running
of Scandisk at boot up (initiated by the Windows boot startup sequence)
due to inadvertently shutting down the system with the power button or if
the system crashes is acceptable and will not interrupt the Recovery Magic
application. |

Can Recovery Magic recover the HDD
after FDisk has been used to reformat the
disk? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Running FDisk is not
recommended. You should not attempt to reformat your hard disk using FDisk
or similar reformat utility while Recovery Magic is installed. FDisk may
change the contents of the recovery backup files Recovery Magic saves in
the Master Boot Record - MBR. Recovery Magic may not be able to recover
the disk back to the saved 'saved state' details. |

|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
 |
Can I use the halt mode for my
notebook after Recovery Magic is installed? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The System Halt Mode for
notebook PCs should not be used to ensure the proper operation of Recovery
Magic. The notebook system halt mode has three types to save battery power
- Monitor halt - HDD halt - System halt. When Recovery Magic is installed
it is recommended that only the Monitor halt is used. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
 |
Can other disk utilities be run while Recovery Magic is installed? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
It is not recommended while Recovery Magic is installed that you run from within Windows any disk analysis program (such as or ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter or any similar disk management programs), or reformat your disk with FDisk. However, as long as such utilities do not damage Recovery Magic's backup file in MBR area, they could be used. But, this is not recommended as nobody knows what would happen.
Recommendation : if you need to use these disk utilities, uninstall Recovery Magic first, then run these utilities. When you have Finished, then reinstall Recovery Magic and save a fresh 'saved state'. |
